Tips for an Effective Research Inquiry

The more specific your message, the more targeted and useful our response will be. When writing a genealogy research question, include the full names of the ancestors or DNA matches involved, approximate dates and geographic locations, and a brief description of what you have already tried. If your question concerns DNA results, mention which testing company you used, the shared centimorgan amount for the match in question, and what trees or surnames are visible for that match. If you are asking about a specific type of record, indicate the state or county and the approximate time period you are researching.

Vague questions such as "how do I find my great-grandmother" are difficult to answer usefully without knowing what you already have, what you have already searched, and where in the country or world she lived. Taking a few extra minutes to organize your existing information before contacting us will result in a much more actionable response. Our team has experience with genealogy research across all US states and many international record collections, and we are happy to point you toward the specific resources most relevant to your particular research challenge.

Before You Write to Us

Remember that DNA results and documentary records work best together. A genetic match can suggest a relationship, but census entries, vital records, church registers, land deeds, and newspaper notices are what allow you to place that relationship accurately in time and place. When the two kinds of evidence agree, your conclusions become far stronger and far easier for other researchers to verify.
